Juan Logan, 1946 geboren in Nashville, Tennessee, lebt und arbeitet heute in Belmont, North Carolina. Logans Kunst spiegelt Themen und Sichtweisen amerikanischer Kultur. Abstrakt und gegenständlich zugleich thematisieren seine Zeichnungen, Gemälde, Skulpturen und Installationen Zusammenhänge von Rasse, Ordnung und Macht. Wie Landkarten zeichnen sie mentale und materielle Landschaften des zeitgenössischen Lebens und seiner Erinnerungskultur(en). Auf ausgesprochen ästhetische Art und Weise machen sie Bezüge sichtbar, deren Ursprünge oft Ereignisse von großem Leid auf individueller wie kollektiver Ebene sind.
„Die Elegy-Reihe erkundet den komplizierten Raum zwischen Erinnerung und Geschehen. Allzu oft sind wir nicht in der Lage, uns an die Details der Erfahrungen unseres täglichen Lebens zu erinnern; insbesondere die Ereignisse, die wir für wichtig halten. Es ist, als ob wir in zwei Welten existieren, heute und an all den Orten von gestern und vorgestern, und uns an immer weniger erinnern, je weiter wir voranschreiten. Elegien sind visuelle Darstellungen der Fragmente dessen, was bleibt. Erfahrungen werden zu einer Farbe, Form oder Linie, die die Essenz eines Ortes, einer Person oder eines Objekts andeuten. Es sind Erinnerungen, denen Details fehlen. Ich male diese für mich selbst, gelegentlich für die Kinder, die an unserer Südgrenze gefangen gehalten werden, aber häufiger für diejenigen, die die Fragmente der Erinnerungen an ein einst erfülltes Leben teilen.“
